In 2018, PONANT was awarded more than 20 high-profile accolades and the year opened a new chapter in the company’s history.

2018 was marked by the launch of the PONANT EXPLORERS series, with the inauguration of the first two of the newest jewels in the fleet: Le Lapérouse and Le Champlain. Designed to allow guests to go ashore in the most inaccessible locations, they combine a limited capacity, great manoeuvrability, an exceptional standard of comfort, sleek design, cutting-edge technology, and respect for the environment.

They are fitted with a multi-sensory underwater lounge called Blue Eye, allowing guests to see, hear and experience the subaquatic environment: a world first!

In November 2018, construction began on the polar exploration vessel, Le Commandant Charcot. This new ship is the most ambitious ever conceived in terms of travel experience and respect for the environment. It will be delivered in 2021. This hybrid electric vessel with liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion will be able to reach the Geographic North Pole and remote parts of Antarctica such as the Weddell Sea, the Ross Sea, or Charcot and Peter I islands.

With these new additions to its fleet, the company is pushing the boundaries of travel and establishing itself as a benchmark for excellence in the field of responsible tourism.
