Scylla becomes Europe’s first river cruise operator to resume river cruising with a Douro itinerary
Leading Swiss river cruise operator, Scylla AG, resumed operations with a cruise on Portugal’s Douro River on 22 May – becoming, once again, the first operator to restart river cruises in Europe after seven months of Covid-19 restrictions, as they did in 2020.
Passengers on board the 88-guest MS ANDORINHA were able to enjoy a pleasant seven-night cruise along Portugal’s golden Douro River.
Arno Reitsma, CEO of Scylla AG, said: “We are very happy to be able to cruise on Europe’s greatest rivers again and are also very proud for being the first operator to do so in this season. We have made a successful start with the Douro itineraries and are pleased to announce the roll out of our river cruises in Germany at the beginning of June.”
Swiss operator, Scylla AG, runs a fleet of riverboats for various European charter clients.
Swiss shipping company, Scylla AG, has been considered a pioneer of river cruising since 1973 and has successfully made a name for itself with the building of innovative ships, and not only in the charter business. Since its foundation, the company has expanded its cruising area from the Rhine to almost all major waterways in Europe, including the Seine, the Rhine and its tributaries the Rhône, the Saône, the Danube and Main. The fleet consists of 35 ships, which are leaders in technology, quality and design; a true reflection of Scylla’s personality. The ships can accommodate between 88 and 220 passengers, travelling in spacious and modern cabins. Scylla ships are used by European charter clients including Phoenix, nicko cruises, TAUCK and Riviera Travel. In 2018, the family behind Scylla founded its own river cruise operator, VIVA Cruises.
