2022 will be a busy year for Saga as it plans to operate nearly 200 cruises across its Ocean and River Cruise business

Saga (Logo) Saga’s two Ocean ships, ‘Spirit of Discovery’ and ‘Spirit of Adventure’ are set to undertake 46 cruises between them and the two brand-new River ships, ‘Spirit of the Rhine’ and ‘Spirit of the Danube’ will be clocking up 91 itineraries in total.

There are also 55 chartered river cruises available for guests to enjoy.

Nigel Blanks, CEO of Saga Cruises, said: “Our guests are experienced travellers and we know they’re looking for opportunities to explore new destinations and try new things.

“We’ve built a cruising schedule for 2022 that caters to their interests, including some really unique options, from little known Croatian islands, to access to cultural events that only take place once every ten years.

“Even the firm favourites such as Norway, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean have unique excursions from dog-sledding and ice hotels, to whale and bird watching, to sea-bed trekking and cooking dinner from the heat of a volcano*. After all, experience is everything.”

Some of Saga’s more unusual Ocean Cruises include:

Spitzbergen’s Arctic landscape, one of Europe’s last great wildernesses. This cruise on ‘Spirit of Adventure’ departs Southampton on 22 July 2022 and travels across the Arctic Circle to discover the dramatic landscapes of Norway’s Svalbard archipelago under the light of the Midnight Sun.

Sights include the Lofoton Islands, where jagged mountain peaks are reflected in the surrounding coastal waters and there will be opportunities to learn about Norway’s Viking heritage before cruising the southern tip of Norway to the Renaissance town of Kristiansand. With up to 15% currently off, prices start from £5,269 per person for 18 nights.

‘Spirit of Adventure’ will also depart Southampton on a 22-night cruise to Croatia and the cities of the Central Mediterranean on 6 August 2022, visiting classic destinations such as Venice and Malta, and introducing guests to more unusual ports of call such as Zadar on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast and Ravenna in Italy. Save up to 20% now with prices starting from £7,008 per person.

‘Spirit of Discovery’ will undertake a 17-night cruise Baltic cruise into the Gulf of Bothnia, stopping in unusual ports including Kemi in Finland, Visby in Sweden and Skagen in Denmark.

Guests will see the striking natural landscape of the Jutland Peninsula, the island-scattered Stockholm Archipelago and Finland’s hinterland. Excursions include cities such as Gothenburg, Stockholm, Gdansk, Tallinn and Riga with their ranges of amazing architecture and UNESCO heritage. ‘Spirit of Discovery’ departs Dover on 31 July 2022 and prices currently start from £4,949 (including up to 25% off).

All Saga’s Ocean Cruises are all-inclusive with a complimentary door-to-door chauffeur service, or Saga can arrange car parking near the port, domestic flights or standard class rail/coach travel. There are no hidden costs on-board either.

Saga Cruises come with all dining and house drinks including a selection of wines with lunch and dinner, Wi-Fi, on-board gratuities, fitness facilities, 24-hour room service, sightseeing tours in selected ports, entertainment (from lectures to recitals), porterage of luggage, shuttle buses to nearest town centres and travel insurance with up to £5m coronavirus cover included.

With River ship, ‘Spirit of the Rhine’ already sailing and ‘Spirit of the Danube’ set to join its sister in Amsterdam in March 2022, there’s a busy schedule ahead for the two 190-guest ships.

In May, July and August, ‘Spirit of the Danube’ will be part of a unique event that only takes place every ten years. Travelling through Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and Germany guests will visit a variety of towns on the way before visiting the small village of Oberammergau in the Bavarian Alps.

In 1634 a ‘Passion Play’ was staged there after plague struck the village and the residents vowed that if God spared them, they would perform it every decade. Miraculously, there were no further victims and, true to their word, the play continues to be performed every ten years. It is estimated that some 500,000 people will watch one of the 102 performances taking place in the village.

Prices start from £2,649 per person for the nine-night cruise with departures from various airports around the UK.

The Floriade Expo in the Netherlands also only takes place every ten years and in summer 2022, ‘Spirit of the Rhine’ will visit the Expo, Meise Botanic Gardens and Keukenhof Gardens, with celebrity guest, horticulturist Pippa Greenwood hosting talks on the topic. Prices start from £2,049 per person for ten nights with departures from various UK airports on 14 May 2022.

And ornithologists can enjoy seven-nights birdwatching on the Danube Delta – a trip unique to Saga. Starting with a two-night hotel stay in the cultural capital city of Bucharest before departing on ‘Spirit of the Danube’ along the wildlife-rich Danube Delta before stopping at the historic fishing village of St Georghe for a two-night mooring on the tip of the reserve and further exploration on smaller boats, which can negotiate the lakes and marshes.

On-board giving expert insights and talks is wildlife presenter, Martin Hughes-Games. The final full day includes a trip to the Romanian town of Braila, where guests can explore independently or head across the border to Moldova. Prices start from £1,899 per person cruise departing from various UK airports on 18 June 2022.

Saga’s River Cruises operate on an all-inclusive or full-board basis. All include a complimentary door-to-door chauffeur service, or Saga can arrange car parking near the port, domestic flights or standard class rail/coach travel. Also included are at least three included excursions and all gratuities on board Spirit of the Rhine and Spirit of the Danube, return flights and transfers and travel insurance with up to £5m coronavirus cover.

All Saga River Cruises also enjoy free wifi, a welcome drinks reception and Captain’s Dinner.

(*The dog sledding and ice hotel are available on the Under the glow of the Northern Lights cruise. The whale and bird-watching is part of a Caribbean Spring cruise and the volcano cooking and sea-bed trekking experiences are part of The Glorious Canary Islands cruise)
